Obituary of Norman Hunter

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband and father Norman Hunter, in his 78th year of Whitby, Ontario, passed away on Friday, January 29th , 2016 in Oshawa, Ontario. Norman is survived by his beloved wife, Helena Maureen (nee Nicholl) of Whitby. Loving daughters Wendy Civello (Joe) and Lori Hunter, grandchildren Christina Civello, Brandon Civello and Vincent Forza. Survived by sisters Betty Bull and Grace Collins and many nieces and nephews. Norman is preceded in death by parents Christina Hunter (Dow), William Hunter, brothers John Hunter and William Hunter, granddaughter Felicia Nicole Civello and many nieces and nephews. Norman will be sadly missed by his extended family and friends, both in Canada and abroad. Visitation will be held at De Stefano Funeral Home, 1289 Keith Ross Drive, Oshawa, Ontario on Sunday, January 31 at 2:00pm to 4:00pm and 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Funeral Service will be held at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 209 Cochrane Street, Whitby, Ontario on Monday February 1 at 11:00am with Reverend Jonathan Tait officiating. Interment will follow at Thornton Cemetery, 1200 Thornton Road North, Oshawa, Ontario. A former bricklayer he continued his studies in Education, where he earned a B.A. at York University and an M.Ed at the University of Toronto. His love of learning propelled him toward a lengthy teaching career capped off with 21 years as a retired high school principal. A lover of all sports, particularly of soccer, Norman played, refereed and coached the beautiful game. A great recreational traveler, his love of travel led him to teaching positions in Jamaica, Kenya and Oman. A lifelong Presbyterian member he also became a Mason at Lodge Osatua in Nairobi, Kenya. Additionally he was a member of Caledonia Lodge #637 and Post 144 Royal Canadian Legion in Clearwater, Florida as well as Pipes and Drums of Lindsay, Ontario and Pipes and Drums of Tampa Bay, Florida. Memorial donations may be made to Prostate Cancer Canada or St Andrews Presbyterian Church Whitby. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Oncology and Supportive teams at Lakeridge Health Oshawa and Community Care Access Centre.
